Resolve Family Mediation can be used by anyone affected by family breakdown including separation, divorce and dissolution of civil partnership.

Mediation is also available to other family members, e.g.  grandparents having difficulty with seeing their grandchildren.

Before any joint meetings, the mediator will have met with you both individually for a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM) to find out more about the issues that need resolving, give you more information about mediation and answer any questions or concerns you have about what happens next.

You will then attend a series of meetings together, either face to face or online. If you feel unable to meet together please let us know and we can discuss alternatives. You will be provided with a written summary at the end of each mediation session

You can discuss anything you both agree to discuss. Common agenda items are:

Children

• How much time the children spend with each of you during term time and school holidays.
• Arrangements for Christmas or other religious occasions and New Year.
• Holidays away with the children.
• Arrangements for special occasions, e.g., birthdays, special family events.
• How much time the children spend with grandparents.
• Child maintenance and financial support.

Property and Finance

• What happens to the family home.
• What happens with other assets, including savings and investments.
• Division of pensions.
• Division of liabilities.
• Is spousal maintenance to be paid.

Most people find that mediation is:

• Quicker than resolving disputes via solicitors or court.
• Less stressful than court proceedings.
• Considerably cheaper than resolving disputes via solicitors or court. The average cost of divorce through the courts is approximately £15,000.
• You keep control of the decisions made rather than a Judge telling you what will happen.

The average cost is approximately £1,000 per person in mediation fees. This includes the cost of your MIAM and any documents produced at the end of mediation. Charges are per person per session. Children often have concerns about the changes taking place in their lives.

Child Inclusive Mediation gives children an opportunity to meet with the mediator to share their worries and concerns.

The meeting with the children is confidential and they decide if and how their views and opinions are shared with their parents.
